Normally, I’d call this sour grapes lunacy, but we know that the Trump campaign was in cahoots with the Russians and we know that the Russians interfered in the election. To what extent is unclear, but you can bet I would call for a recount. I wouldn’t limit it to the states Clinton lost either. I’d recount any state that used an electronic system that could have been hacked, and I’d have the DNC pay for it. I’d consider it money well spent, in fact.
At this point, it looks like Clinton won the popular vote by about 1.7 million 2.2 million votes. That’s a massive systemic failure. Arguably, it’s a systemic failure that the Founding Fathers intended, but that doesn’t mean they’re right. I’m not saying there aren’t problems with a straight democratic popular vote, but it would be better than what we’ve got, or, maybe more accurately, I don’t think what we’ve got is working as it should. When government doesn’t express the will of the people it’s hard to argue it’s “by the people” or “for the people.”
UPDATE: Security researcher Alex Halderman is widely respected. This isn’t some nut job calling for a recount. My Twitter feed is loaded with commentators saying that the only reason this is a big deal is because Halderman says it is, and the trust him implicitly.
UPDATE 2: Halderman has issued a more direct response saying that he was somewhat misquoted and that the NY Magazine numbers are off. He doesn’t think that election results will change, but he wants an investigation to determine the reliability of the electronic voting machines.
