States with universal or near-universal school choice programs: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming. These are predominately red states, though Minnesota has a program as well that is tax-deduction based rather than direct payments to private schools.

I do not know what this means for public education in these states or in America generally, but I certainly understand the impetus. Public education in Oregon has dived off a cliff, and it’s hard not to think citizens, parents, and tax payers deserve better.

Assuming around 53 million school-age children in the United States, this would put around 42% of all students in a school choice state.

We sent our kids to private elementary school even without tax breaks, and we do not regret that choice.
