Jonah’s just started his second week of swim lessons and seems to finally be getting into kicking. It’s taken him some times because he initially prefers observation to participation in virtually every endeavor and swimming has been no exception. Regardless of whether he’s able to dog paddle at the end of the week, he’s having fun and that bodes well for future aquatic activities.
Jonah’s also taken in recent days to using “please” and “thank you” much more frequently, a nice touch of civility and class for a two year-old. Or maybe I should say for any age but especially for a two year-old. He still has his unhappy moments, but the Terrible Twos hasn’t been the Apocalypse we’d feared, particularly compared to some of the stories we read online. So that’s a good thing.
The heat wave of the last few days has been tough, and I’m afraid that the worst is yet to come. The house withstands virtually any temperature until the evening of the first day, then it heats up and doesn’t let go. If the outside temperature has dropped by then, we just open all the windows and doors, and the problem is solved. But if not, we’re in for an uncomfortable night.
So I’m calling an electrical contractor tomorrow to add an attic fan to the roof line. My hope is that the fan will vent the attic air sufficiently to keep the higher temperatures there from pushing down into the insulation and the house, and thus keep the living areas pleasant. We always have the option of the basement, of course, I hate giving up on half the house just because it’s been in the 90s for a few days.
I’ll also be adding a sliding window on the north garage wall, something which should help any breeze cool down the garage faster. I don’t anticipate that will make a huge difference, but it might help a little and it’s in the long-term house plan anyway.
Finally, I’m going to go out tomorrow morning and spray water all over the roof. Water evaporation moves a lot of BTUs and might be enough to give us another tolerable day. With high 80s to low 90s projected through Thursday, I’m hoping so.
